Question: Pet Bird - English Budgie or American Parakeet?

As far as I know, the only difference between the two species is geography. As a Parakeet, is also known as a Budgie.

I had a few Budgie's / Parakeet's as a kid. They were fun and had their own personalities. I remember one that loved to be outside of his cage. And another that was afraid to be outside of the cage. This is all that I know of to share.

If you dont want alot of noise budgie if you want anything else parakeet THEY ARE BOTH amazing pets and good companions. So really depends on what you want personaly. But a parakeet doesnt really make alot of noise except when frightened

Your best bet would be to get a handfed bird from a breeder that handles them daily. Otherwise you will be faced with taming a wild bird ---not an easy task for the inexperienced. Keep the bird away from the common wall and you should have no problem with noise.

The birds are the same except the English budgie has been bred for show. It is a slightly larger ,rounder headed bird than the version known as a parakeet. I like them. Do try to find a small ,good breeder. It is well worth the effort.

They should live with good care about 13-15 years. I had one that was 18.

As for vet visits that will vary. I dont have my bills handy but I believe my avian vet charges around $38 . She is certified . The call includes a hands on physical and weigh in and toe nail clip. everything else is extra. If your bird looks and acts healthy she usually doesn't go any further unless you want to. If price is a concern call ahead and ask the receptionist for prices. They do it everyday. That's their job.

In response to your questions:

1) They make a very low level of noise compared too the larger parrots who can screech and really annoy you, The highest sound they can make is a sort of sharp shout which they don't use that much, a lot of the time the bird makes lovely warbling noises or is silent. I don't think it will bother you neighbors, I'm usually in the next room and barely hear mine.

2) To my knowledge all Budgies are in the Parakeet species, and the American Parakeet = Common Budgie. If however you are going to get an English Budgie, these are a little bigger than normal ones (and look nicer in my opinion too, more haughtier ;) ). They make the same amount of noise and are both extremely tame-able in the hands of a good trainer.

3) If fed a good diet of pellets and fresh fruit and vegetables, around 10-15years

4) I'd say around 20 dollars, but I'm not sure, I don't have an avian veterinarian where I live.
