Budgie Information - Budgie Information Questions
Question #1:
What bird should my grandma get?
My grandma wants a bird. She already has two dogs. She says she will wait till he gets a house though to rent or buy. She wants a parrot but i'm not for sure if she knows that much about them all the birds she ever had was a budgie/parakeet and two doves. Is their any like small parrots or anything like that and can u give me information for that bird? Any place we could get cheap bird cages to?She wants a cute personality and one that can talk real good. It can't be to loud like a cockatoo.
Would a parrotlet be good or what is a good parrot for her?
Plus how do u keep them from being mean when they grow up like when they get hormones

Question #3:
How to hand rear budgies (advice on what formula to use, how to set up brooder, age to take from nest, etc)?
Hey there!I am a fairly experienced budgie owner and breeder. However, I have never hand reared a chick, though I have been really interested in doing it for years, I just didn't want to do it when I was worried I might not have enough time to do it. Now I do, and I'd love to take one or two chicks if the English budgies I have sitting in eggs bring them out to hand rear.
Anyway, I need a good guide to do it. I do already have an idea and have researched it, but I want to make sure I am doing everything right and get some questions answered.
1. What age do you advise to take the chicks from their parents? I've seen differing opinions. Is about 2-3 weeks the right idea?
2. What is a good formula to use that is accessible in Victoria, Australia? If I have to go out of my way to get Roudybush or Kaytee, which seem to be adviced often, I will, but I am having trouble finding any in my area or on Australian eBay. If you know of any that will keep the chicks healthy and are available in Australia, I'd love to hear of them. Is Avione an okay formula? It's around a lot, but I can't find much feedback on it.
3. I'll be setting up a 'brooder' myself. I have a small 5W heat mat (is that okay? I really don't know about watts), thermostat and hydrometer. How big should the brooder be? If you could give me a range in cm that would be great. Will a plastic container do fine? For bedding, am I correct in thinking that newspaper and paper towel is all that is needed?
4. Any extra information or links to good guides to hand rearing would be very appreciated.
Thank you!
Question #4:
Female budgie with white cere?
I have a female budgie and she has a white cere. But she is about 2 years old so why is this? Also is she able to mate because i want my two birds to mate and i read information on how to care for the babies and eggs. Thanks!Question #5:
Is my Budgie Male or Female?
I have been told by a Person with previous budgie experience that my Budgie Sora is female but other information I have found tells me to lean toward Sora being more male. His/Her ceres is a grayish/ whitish color around His/Her nostrils but more of a Brownish/Purplish/ Blueish around the rest of the Ceres. She/ He squawks louder and more than my other Budgie I know for sure is Male. He/She is more Jumpy and defensive and doesn't like being touched but loves to perch on fingers. He/She Bites more and Harder than my Male Budgie. She/ He is under a year old. Please Help...I'm getting Mixed signals here...Question #6:
Is this budgie egg-bound?
How long does it usually take for a budgie to lay an egg? What are the signs of when a budgie is going to lay an egg? Am I just pushing more a questions into what is suppose to be one question? I'm just very very paranoid about my budgies dying of egg-bound and I'm pretty sure that my budgie is about lay one. It's just very stressful for me so if you could give me as much information as possible on how do I tell when an egg is near. Also, I've been reading the eggs are close when the budgie's poops and larger then normal? Please do your best on not giving me information on what egg-binding is. I know what it is, I'm and just so PARANOID! =(Question #7:
What is the difference between a parakeet and a budgie?
You see them in every pet store, the tiny bright colored birds just chirping away. They are always labeled as Parakeets, but are they really called that? I see the same birds online listed as Budgies, so what's the difference? For some reason, I don't think they are truly "parakeets"...Would like some *expert advise* please, from breeders or really, really knowledgeable people.
The reason I am asking is because I bought one yesterday from the petstore. While I consider myself to be a cat expert, I know nothing about birds other than the basics. I am doing as much research as I can, but right now I am researching care and health information, so I figured I'd ask here for the actual name thing..
But while I am at it, I'd also like to know if I'm doing this right so far... So I guess this is a couple questions in one, lol.
I got him (or her) yesterday. I'll say "he" for now... He is the youngest out of all of them because he still has those "baby feathers" seen on tiny babies. He's right at the fledgling stage with a few "baby feathers still on his back. He was the easiest one to handle and I figured he was young enough to hand tame.
I set up a 10 gallon tank with two ceramic bowls, one on each side of the tank (one food, one water). The bowls are tiny hamster bowls so he can't drown in the water or make a big mess. This is a temporary arrangement to help me hand tame him. I think it would cause more stress to chase him around a cage to get him out every time wanted to work with him. Plus it's similar to the set up at the pet store. I am using the aspen bedding 99% dust free, the kind used for snakes but also for birds. Just a thin layer of it. He has a cuddle bone and two toys handing from the metal screen door on top. The first night, after an hour, he started eating and exploring his new home and then started climbing on his toys (I think he was looking for an escape route, lol).
I covered the cage with a towel before bed (left an opening on top for air/circulation) and this morning he was fine. I took him out and spent 30 minutes on my bed with him, just talking away gently and getting him used to my voice and scent. I got some Millet Spray and am using that as treats and encouragement. He's already eating comfortably on my hand and he puffs up quite a big and seems content.
I put him back up after 30 minutes and 2 hours later, I took him back out and places a towel on my shoulder and he's sitting there as we speak. He's eating the spray from my hands/finger and is not spooking badly, just cautious when I do something new.
Oh, and he seems to like it when I rub my nose against his chest feathers, he puffs up, ruffles his tail feathers and starts exploring my nose with his tongue, and he also rubs up against it to on his own accord.
He is also stretching his wings and doing what these guys do when running around the cage at the pet store as happy as can be.
So...along with the name question, am I doing things right? I am only going use the millet spray seeds for treats. He loves them is willingly eats them from my hand. Granted, it's been less than 24 hours since I brought him home, but he's adjusting rather well. I also thought to mention, I do NOT chase him around the tank to get him out, I simply talk to him while proping the lid open, lower my hand down and nudge him belly and he steps up without any problem. He does not freak out badly and does not run around trying to get away. he's just a little cautious and his feathers are close to his body but as soon as he's completely out of the tank, he puffs right up and ruffles his tail feathers.
SORRY for a long, long explanation... I just wanted to make sure I was doing this right...
I should also add that he will preen and groom himself while perched on my shoulder or finger and he is starting to make noises too.. and is getting really active while handling him - he has been on my shoulder since I wrote the question and added this note.
Question #8:
What is the clicking sound I hear in budgie training videos?
In all of the youtube videos of budgie tricks, I always hear a clicking sound. I know it has something to do with the training the bird but I would like more information on it. Thanks :)Question #9:

Question #10:
Help with my budgie!!?
Okay I got my budgie on sunday, his wings are clipped.and im already spending a lot of time with him, I read to him and tell him hes a "good boy"
Ive even rested my hand inside the cage multiple time, he seems fine with it.
I tried to pet him a bit, and the store owner told me to expect to get bitten, but he hasnt bitten me
He just tries to get away. Now of course as soon as he seems distressed i pull my hand out, but this one time he flew out and i didnt know how to get him back in. I spent about a half hour convincing him to get on my finger. It worked, he sat on a bit and even ate some seeds from my other hand i used as bait/reward.
Im scared im taking this a bit too fast, and why does he run away instead of biting, and will he become fearful of people if i have taken it too fast??
I got him at a pet store, not a breeder, therefore hes pretty wild.
This is not my first budgie, but im still inexpreienced.
You can be harsh, Ive probably messed up. But at least tell me how to solve this and answer my question reasonably.
Thanks :)
any further information can be put up if requested
Question #11:
Budgie acting normally, but favouring right foot?
My one-year-old budgie has always favoured her right foot a bit, and it's always seemed a bit weaker than the other one but she's been doing it a little more the last few days. She's eating/drinking/playing/talking normally; the only time she isn't is when she's moulting. She's bobbing her tail a bit, but she's always done that too with no discernible problems. Should I be very concerned?Other information:
I'm not sure if she's getting enough sleep and she is a little bit afraid of my hands unless they have food in them.
Question #12:
are there any budgie breeders in san diego?
hi i am looking for a budgie that is hand tamed and i was considering getting one from petsmart or petco but i would rather find a breeder. If you have any information please help me out. ThanksQuestion #13:
Questions on parakeets vs. doves?
Okay, so I'm considering getting a bird. My options are between one or two budgies from the pet store, and a pair of adult doves from my friend who is giving them away. Which would you pick, especially taking into consideration that the doves are very much bonded to each other? Also, what are some of the diseases you could catch from birds? Are they a generally germy pet? How is a budgie's temperment? What about doves? How easy are they to care for? just general information would be fabulous, thanks :)Question #14:
monthly cost of owning a dog or a budgie?
hii need to know the monthly cost of owning a dog (preferably in £) it needs to be based on food, bedding ect. basically how much do you spend on average on your dog per month and what on?
i also need the same information for a budgerigar (budgie). i don't mind which question you answer but i kinda need answers for both =]
Question #15:
how can I convince my parents to get me a bird?
Yes, I am responsible. I do all my chores on time, etc....I really want a pet bird (budgie) I've done tons of research and now have a binder full of information. The only problem is that I used to have a fish, one day their water got so dirty and smelly that we couldn't go in the room anymore! Finally my fish died, I was really sad but my parents were somewhat happy to have the "horrible smelly fish" out of the room. I really want a bird! I have done research but how do I bring this up to my parents what I thought about was doing chores and being responsible for the next two weeks and then bringing it up-- but how do I bring it up? Do I just tell them? How do I convince them that birds do not smell and I will clean up after them everyday?
Parents, how/why did you get your children pets and how did they convince you?
P.S.
My parents hate dealing with the hassle of having pets. I will promise them that I will clean up after them, but I don't know if they will agree. My parents like having a "clean" house.
Please Help!!! Your help is much appreciated!
Question #16:
Pet Bird - English Budgie or American Parakeet?
I'm looking to get a pet bird. I'm pretty set on a Parakeet/Budgie as I'll be a new bird owner, and also live in apartment and so don't want noise to disturb my neighbors.1.) How much noise do these birds make? Will they be heard through the walls (I can sometimes hear my neighbors TV, but it seems only when it's on loud, to give you an idea of the sound proof-ness of the apartments)
2.) What exactly are the differences between English Budgies and American Parakeets? I've heard the English Budgies are larger and more docile. I'm not sure if that's a good thing though. Which tend to make better pets? I really want to get a hand raised bird, but the only breeders I'm finding in my area seem to have English Budgies. Which will make more noise? Which will be a better hand/lap pet?
3.) How long do the two different versions usually live? Do they have different requirements in terms of care?
Thanks for your help! Any other information you think I might want to know would be helpful.
4.) Also, how much does a trip to the Avian veterinarian usually cost? (say it's just a checkup, or just to bring the bird in to be tested on my way home for the first time)
Forgot to mention. I'm planning on having one bird only, in order to have that bird be more sociable with humans, if that has any bearing as to which breed version I'll do better with.

Question #19:
Budgie health question?
I have a Budgie (Buddy) who we estimate to be under to around a year old. Recently we added a friend for him (Eva) who we know for a fact is older.I actually use the word "him" loosely because Buddy may actually be a Betty, we just aren't sure yet lol.
Buddy's behavior has been pretty much the same since we got him : he's social, eats, drinks, feeds Eva, sings etc.
He preens himself often and has looked kind of fluffy lately, but also seems to be molting since he got in some stripped and dark blue feathers.
Then today I noticed he started regurgitating seeds but not too feed Eva. He just does it and then shakes his head and little seed bits fly everywhere.
His eyes look fine, nostrils look fine, beak and feet all fine. Poo is the same as its always been.
He just seems "puffy" and spitting up seed. I also noticed that he looks like he's yawning more or maybe dry heaving?
I haven't heard any strange noises coming from him.
We let them out today and they flew around and interacted with us and each other as usual.
He's also been eating normally and doing his crazy flapping wing exercises, or whatever it is he does haha.
Should I be concerned? Do you think he absolutely needs to go in for a vet visit or could this be something treatable at home?
I appreciate any information / help you can offer.
Just want to include that he is VERY active. Even more active than Eva (who's only really active when she's out of the cage).
Hes not acting sick at all. In fact, I'm watching him try to climb/ swing from a little rope in the cage at this very moment.
Is it possible that he did throw up before, but that It passed?
Question #20:
Does anyone know any good sites that have lots of information about budgie breeding?
